Open Wells Initiative
Getting started
So, you want to be a part of reopening the spiritual wells of your community or region. How did you begin? Genesis 26 tells the account of Isaac coming into authority after the death of his father, Abraham. Abraham had great favor with God and the people he lived with. So powerful was God’s blessing on him and his people, he was both revered and feared by his neighbors. When he died, Isaac took his place as the patriarch and became rich and powerful in his own right. As a result, his neighbors plotted to undermine him by “filling in the wells.”
"So, all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth" Genesis 26:15.
Wells in ancient culture were the evidence of the right to control the land; the land went with the well. Abraham dug and maintained many wells, thereby controlling a substantial land area. In order to cancel his right to that territory, it was necessary to remove the wells. The Philistines were well (no pun intended!) aware of this and proceeded to fill in these wells to drive Isaac off the land. For whatever reason, Isaac was complicit with their tactics and willingly moved. He went to a second location where Abraham had dug a well and found that it had been filled in. Isaac reopened that well, but the locals quarreled with him, and he again abandoned the well. This happened a third time before opening the wells at Rehoboth and Beersheba without resistance. It is following the re-establishment of these wells that God meets with him and gives him his own blessing.
"That night the LORD appeared to him and said, 'I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.' Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well" Genesis 26:24, Isaac marked both the physical location and the blessing with a well.
